Module objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to developing skills and knowledge required for the presentation and management of female infertility be able to:

  • analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
  • perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
  • demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

Knowledge and understanding

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to:

  • the predisposing factors, presentation, differential diagnoses and management of female infertility including:
    • Fallopian tube and uterine pathology
    • anovulation
    • polycystic ovarian syndrome
    • endocrine pathology
    • genetic abnormalities
    • endometriosis
    • fibroids
    • premature ovarian failure
    • age-related infertility
    • unexplained infertility
    • oocyte procurement
    • oocyte banking
    • lifestyle factors
    • environmental factors
    • psychosexual issues
    • counselling and support

Technical and clinical skills

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance, adaptation and mastery of the following technical procedures and laboratory skills:

  • managing female infertility.

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply knowledge of presentation and management of female infertility to perform, adapt and master the clinical skills necessary to manage to:

  • liaise with and advise patients and clinical colleagues, using the available evidence base, on the diagnosis and management and treatment of the female patient
  • liaise with all health professionals and regulatory bodies as appropriate regarding the management of female infertility.
