Module objective

By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST, with respect to children presenting with progressive, sudden or late onset deafness, will be able to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge and perform a specialist assessment and treatment of patients demonstrating the attitudes and behaviours necessary for the role of a Consultant Clinical Scientist within a patient focused service and in particular will be able to detect, investigate, diagnose and manage progressive or sudden deafness in children.

Knowledge and understanding

By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply their expert knowledge required with respect to: 

  • the signs, symptoms, aetiology and management of progressive or sudden deafness.
  • the psychological sequelae of progressive or sudden deafness.
  • the impact of progressive, sudden or late onset hearing loss on speech and communication skills, education and school performance
  • the changing educational needs of the child.
  • the appropriate audiovestibular and other investigations.
  • when to refer for further medical opinions and to other allied healthcare professionals.
  • local and national guidelines covering the identification, management and investigation of progressive or sudden hearing loss.
  • the indications, benefits, limitations and side effects of any medication used for progressive or sudden hearing loss.
  • Child safeguarding.

Technical and clinical skills

By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current research and its application to the performance and mastery of a range of technical skills whilst critically reflecting and applying in practice a range of clinical and communication skills to advise and communicate effectively with children, their families or carers and other healthcare professionals and will:

  • take an accurate history and undertake an accurate and reliable audiovestibular examination as appropriate in the role of Consultant Clinical Scientist.
  • select, perform and interpret appropriate audiovestibular investigations
  • with the multi-disciplinary team select and interpret other appropriate investigations including speech and language assessment, psychological assessment and vestibular assessment.
  • explain to children, parent/their carers the planned investigations and the results
  • refer for specialist opinions as indicated.
  • select and interpret appropriate investigations and take appropriate action .
  • assess benefits and problems of intervention correctly and communicate this effectively to the family and the child.
  • reflect on the challenges of applying research to practice in relation to these areas of practice and suggest improvements, building on a critique of available evidence.

Attitudes and behaviours

By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will be expected to evaluate their own response to both normal and complex situations demonstrating the professional attributes and insights required of a Clinical Scientist in HSST working within the limits of professional competence referring as appropriate to senior staff and will recognise:

  • the anxiety and stress caused by progressive or sudden deafness and the possible natural reactions surrounding the diagnosis for both the child and parents/carers and respond accordingly.
  • the importance of involvement of other professionals in the management of such children and the value of voluntary organisations.
  • recognise the importance of child safeguarding.
  • be committed to and support continuous improvement of therapeutic services, with particular reference to auditing practice, evidence based practice, innovative new and improved technologies.
