Reflective practice guidance

The guidance below is provided to support reflection at different time points, providing you with questions to aid you to reflect for this training activity.   • What does ‘peer support’ mean in a professional context?
  • What skills and experiences can you draw upon to offer effective support?
  • What information will you need to gather from the individual and their manager to understand their needs?
  • How will you ensure your support is helpful and aligns with the individual’s and the team’s goals?

In action

  • As you interact with your peer, are you actively listening to their initial experiences and concerns in the new environment?
  • Are you consciously drawing upon your own experiences of joining the team or organisation to offer relevant advice and support?
  • As you discuss with the manager how your input can be most useful, are you considering specific ways you can practically assist your peer’s integration?

On action

  • What were the initial challenges faced by the individual entering the new environment? What types of support did you offer? How did the manager perceive your input and the needs of the new individual?
  • How effective were you at identifying the support needs of someone new to an environment? What communication and interpersonal skills did you utilise when offering peer support? How well did you collaborate with the manager to provide effective support?
  • How will you apply your understanding of the challenges faced by newcomers in future situations? What strategies for providing effective peer support will you remember for the future? How will you approach collaboration with managers when offering support to colleagues?
