Reflective practice guidance

The guidance below is provided to support reflection at different time points, providing you with questions to aid you to reflect for this training activity. They are provided for guidance and should not be considered as a mandatory checklist. Trainees should not be expected to provide answers to each of the guidance questions listed.

Before action

  • What specific data management process (e.g., input, storage, retrieval, or analysis for service delivery) are you considering for review? Why do you think the use and management of this data could be improved?
  • What are the potential benefits of improvements in this area, particularly for service delivery or patient outcomes?
  • What different ways could the data usage be improved?

In action

  • As you review how patient data is managed and used, are you looking out for pain points or inefficiencies in the processes, for staff skills or staff training gaps, for areas where data is not being used as much as it might be?
  • As you identify potential areas for improvement, are you actively considering different solutions (e.g. technical implementations, staff training, process changes) and their potential benefits and drawbacks?
  • As you think about and develop recommendations for improvement, are you thinking through the potential impact of these changes in multiple areas (e.g. on staff workload, data accuracy, patient outcomes)?

On action

  • What task or process related to patient data did review and make recommendations about? What were the specific ways in which you suggested improvements could be made?
  • How effective were you at identifying areas for improvement within your department’s use of patient data? If you found the activity difficult, does this indicate a skills gap that you and/or your department might address in future?
  • How might you develop skills or behave in future in order to continue to identify and contribute to service improvement initiatives using data in your department?

Beyond action

  • What have you observed with regards to the recommendations you made? Have you identified any further refinements you might make to both data use and/or your recommendations?
  • How has this experience developed your problem-solving skills and your ability to make recommendations for change within a healthcare setting?
  • In your future practice, how will you continue to identify areas for improvement and actively contribute to service development using data analysis and insight?
