Training activity information

Details

Follow a patient sample from specimen receipt to authorisation of the final diagnostic cytopathology report and reflect on the journey

Type

Observational training activity (OTA)

Evidence requirements

Evidence the observation or experience has been undertaken by the trainee.

Reflections on the observation or experience at two timepoints including contextualisation to the trainees own practice. E.g., for planned observations, a reflection before the observation and after, or for unplanned events a reflection one day after and another reflection a week later.

Considerations

  • The members of the multidisciplinary team involved in providing a clinical cytopathology service
  • The role of cytopathology in the patient pathway and impact of reporting timelines on wider diagnostic and therapeutic targets
  • The steps required to record data including patient identity, information governance and the document management process
  • Health and safety, including laboratory safety and handling fresh samples
  • Infection control measures when working with patient samples
  • Ethical and safe use, storage and disposal of residual samples and stained preparations
