Type

Developmental training activity (DTA)

Evidence requirements

Evidence the activity has been undertaken by the trainee.

Reflection on the activity at one or more time points after the event including learning from the activity and/or areas of the trainees practice for development.

An action plan to implement learning and/or to address skills or knowledge gaps identified.

Considerations

  • Stakeholder analysis methods/tools
  • Stakeholder engagement methods
  • Stakeholder mapping
  • Evaluation methods and measures to review effective stakeholder engagement

Reflective practice guidance

The guidance below is provided to support reflection at different time points, providing you with questions to aid you to reflect for this training activity. They are provided for guidance and should not be considered as a mandatory checklist. Trainees should not be expected to provide answers to each of the guidance questions listed.

Before action

  • What local informatics strategy will you focus on? Who are the key stakeholders involved (or who should be)? How can you appraise their role and the engagement process?
  • What insights do you hope to gain about the importance of stakeholder involvement in the development and implementation of informatics strategies? What do you already know about stakeholder analysis and engagement techniques? How do you expect to develop your critical appraisal skills in evaluating the impact of stakeholder engagement? What do you anticipate learning about how to develop effective recommendations for future stakeholder engagement?
  • Discuss this activity with your training officer and those involved in the local informatics strategy to understand the history of stakeholder engagement and any available documentation. Identify the key stakeholders for the chosen strategy. Consider frameworks for stakeholder analysis (e.g., power/interest grid). Think about different methods for appraising the role of stakeholders and the effectiveness of engagement (e.g., reviewing meeting minutes, interviewing stakeholders). Reflect on your understanding of stakeholder management and engagement principles and consider best practices for making recommendations.

In action

  • What aspects of stakeholder roles and engagement are you focusing on in your critical appraisal? What criteria are you using to evaluate their involvement?
  • What decisions are you making about the effectiveness of current stakeholder engagement based on the evidence you are reviewing? What factors are you considering in your appraisal?
  • Which parts of critically appraising stakeholder roles and engagement feel more straightforward based on your understanding of stakeholder management principles? Where are you having to consciously analyse the impact of different engagement strategies?
  • How effectively are you identifying the strengths and weaknesses of stakeholder involvement in the strategy Are you able to link engagement (or lack thereof) to the outcomes of the strategy?
  • What challenges are you facing in critically appraising stakeholder engagement or in formulating recommendations for improvement? Are there aspects of engagement where the impact is difficult to assess?
  • What are you learning about the importance of stakeholder engagement in informatics strategy as you perform this appraisal?
  • Are there alternative ways you could be appraising stakeholder involvement or formulating your recommendations?
  • Do you need to seek further information on best practices in stakeholder engagement to inform your recommendations?
  • Are you ensuring your appraisal and recommendations remain focused on the local informatics strategy and relevant stakeholders?

On action

  • Describe the local informatics-related strategy you considered. What was the apparent role of different stakeholders in the development and implementation of this strategy? How effective did this engagement seem to be? What were your key recommendations for improving stakeholder engagement in future strategies?
  • What skills or knowledge did you develop or improve in critically appraising stakeholder roles and engagement in strategic initiatives? Did you gain a better understanding of the importance of effective stakeholder engagement for successful strategy development and implementation? Were there any challenges in assessing the effectiveness of past engagement or in formulating recommendations for the future? What did you learn about stakeholder management? How did your perspective and analysis during the appraisal process (reflection-in-action) influence your conclusions and recommendations? How is the ability to critically appraise and recommend improvements to stakeholder engagement relevant to your future work in healthcare informatics?
  • What areas do you need to develop further in your understanding of stakeholder management theory and practice, or in your critical appraisal skills? How can you apply the lessons learned about effective stakeholder engagement in future projects and strategic initiatives you are involved in? What ‘next steps’ will you take to enhance your skills in this area? What support or resources might be beneficial for your continued learning about stakeholder engagement?

Beyond action

  • Considering your current understanding of stakeholder theory and engagement techniques, how would you evaluate your appraisal of stakeholder roles and your recommendations for future engagement? What would you do differently now to analyse stakeholder influence and plan engagement? Have you been involved in other projects or strategies where stakeholder engagement was critical? How did this initial appraisal experience inform your later approaches? Did discussions with those involved in the informatics strategy reveal insights about stakeholder dynamics that you hadn’t initially considered? Re-examine your reflect-on-action notes for this training activity. Has your understanding of the challenges and benefits of stakeholder engagement in informatics strategy evolved since then?
  • Has your awareness of stakeholder roles influenced how you interact with different individuals or groups involved in projects or initiatives? Has this exercise helped you understand the importance of considering diverse perspectives in strategic planning and implementation? How has this training activity contributed to your understanding of the political and social aspects of implementing informatics strategies? Has it influenced how you think about communication and collaboration with different stakeholders?
  • What skills in analysis, communication, and strategic thinking did you develop through this training activity that will be valuable in future leadership or project management roles? What further learning or resources will you seek to enhance your expertise in stakeholder engagement and management? How will your ability to critically appraise stakeholder roles and plan effective engagement contribute to the successful development and implementation of health informatics strategies in your future career?
