Training activity information

Details

Participate in a NEQAS assessment, review results and make recommendations for any actions required

Type

Developmental training activity (DTA)

Evidence requirements

Evidence the activity has been undertaken by the trainee.

Reflection on the activity at one or more time points after the event including learning from the activity and/or areas of the trainees practice for development.

An action plan to implement learning and/or to address skills or knowledge gaps identified.

Considerations

  • Principles of quality management and quality control and assurance
  • Benefits of both external and internal quality assurance
  • Role in maintaining patient safety

Reflective practice guidance

The guidance below is provided to support reflection at different time points, providing you with questions to aid you to reflect for this training activity. They are provided for guidance and should not be considered as a mandatory checklist. Trainees should not be expected to provide answers to each of the guidance questions listed.

Before action

  • Why is participation in NEQAS important for an IVF laboratory?
  • What is NEQAS (National External Quality Assurance Scheme) and what is its specific relevance to the IVF laboratory?
  • What NEQAS module will you be participating in (e.g., semen analysis, embryo grading)?
  • What are the procedures and timelines for participating in the NEQAS assessment?
  • What are the expected performance standards or criteria assessed by the NEQAS scheme?
  • What processes are in place within the clinic for reviewing NEQAS results and implementing any necessary actions?
  • Consider the specific insights you hope to gain. Will you gain a better understanding of how your laboratory’s performance compares to that of other centres? Will you improve your ability to interpret NEQAS reports? Will you learn how to identify areas where your laboratory’s practices might need to be adjusted or improved based on the NEQAS feedback? Will you understand the process of formulating and implementing recommendations following a NEQAS assessment?
  • Think about what you already know about quality assurance and external assessments. How does NEQAS contribute to the overall quality management system of the laboratory?
  • Ask your training officer about the specific NEQAS module, your role in the assessment process, and the timeline for receiving and reviewing the results. Review any previous NEQAS reports and any actions taken as a result. Familiarise yourself with the NEQAS guidelines and performance criteria for the relevant module.
  • Consider possible challenges you might face. How will you approach interpreting the results, especially if they are unexpected? How will you contribute to the discussion of potential actions if your laboratory’s performance is outside the expected range?
  • Identify how you feel about participating in this external assessment. Do you feel prepared for the assessment and the subsequent review of results?

In action

  • As you participate in the NEQAS assessment, pay attention to the specific tasks and procedures involved. Are you performing them according to the expected standards? Why are these particular aspects being assessed?
  • When reviewing the results, what aspects are you focusing on first? What comparisons are you making to expected or previous results?
  • What parts of the NEQAS process or results analysis feel familiar, and what requires more careful consideration?
  • How well do you feel the laboratory performed in the NEQAS assessment? Are there any areas where the results are unexpected?
  • What challenges are you facing in interpreting the NEQAS report or in identifying potential root causes for any suboptimal results?
  • What are you learning about the laboratory’s performance and areas for potential improvement through this NEQAS participation?
  • How does participation in NEQAS contribute to the overall quality assurance within the IVF laboratory?
  • Are there different ways to interpret the NEQAS results or to identify potential actions? Are you considering various perspectives?
  • Do you need to discuss the results with other members of the team to gain a broader understanding and identify appropriate recommendations?
  • Are your proposed recommendations for action specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART)?

On action

  • What were the key findings of the NEQAS assessment results? How did the laboratory perform compared to other participants? Were there any areas where the laboratory’s performance was particularly strong or weak?
  • What did you learn about the standards and expectations of external quality assurance schemes like NEQAS? What insights did you gain into the laboratory’s performance and areas for potential improvement? How effective do you believe your recommendations for action would be in addressing any identified areas for improvement? How did your reflect-in-action (during the assessment and review) influence your understanding of the results and your proposed actions? Why is participation in external quality assurance schemes important for maintaining high standards in the IVF laboratory?
  • What areas for continued development have you identified in your understanding of external quality assurance and the interpretation of results? How can you apply this learning to future NEQAS assessments and other quality assurance activities? What specific actions will you take to further develop your knowledge in this area? What resources or support might be beneficial for enhancing your understanding of quality assurance principles and practices?

Beyond action

  • Reflect on the specific aspects of the NEQAS assessment you were involved in and the subsequent results. What were your initial reactions to the findings?
  • How has your understanding of the role and importance of external quality assurance schemes like NEQAS developed since this activity?
  • Have there been subsequent NEQAS assessments? How did your experience with this training activity influence your participation or interpretation of the results?
  • Has this activity increased your awareness of the standards and benchmarks used in the IVF field?
  • Have you been involved in implementing any changes or improvements based on NEQAS feedback since this training activity?
  • Consider how this experience contributes to your ability to practice in accordance with quality management standards.
  • How will you continue to engage with and learn from external quality assurance schemes in your future career?
  • How will your understanding of NEQAS contribute to maintaining high standards of performance in the IVF laboratory?
