Select appropriate technique to investigate the frequency and clinical presentation of the following community-based infections:

  • genitourinary tract, including sexually transmitted and urinary tract infections
  • respiratory tract
  • gastrointestinal tract
  • skin and soft tissue
  • eye
  • liver (hepatitis)
  • postoperative/inoculation.

Considerations

  • The range of techniques available and their selection for each of the listed infections. to include:
    • microscopy
    • culture
    • Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT)
    • ELISA
    • mass spectrometry (MS).
  • Factors affecting the selection of techniques and the benefits and implications of each.
  • The protocols and procedures associated with this range of techniques.
