  • spirometry
  • lung volumes
  • gas transfer
  • overnight oximetry
  • limited multichannel sleep studies.

  • Requirements for the investigation environment to ensure the patient’s privacy, dignity and comfort, to facilitate investigation procedure and maximise results.
  • How to check, calibrate and prepare equipment and devices.
  • Correct configuration of recording systems.
  • Correct positioning of the patient to ensure comfort and co-operation.
  • The importance of explaining the procedure to the patient and the impact of incorrect positioning or non-co-operation on investigation results.
  • How to identify potential special needs of patients and the relevant action required.
  • Range of equipment used, relative merits and principles of measurement.
  • Recognition of the errors or potential risks of using defective equipment in clinical practice and the implications of use.
  • Identification of common faults and remedial action.
