There is no clinical experiential learning associated with this module.

Academic content (MSc in Clinical Science)

Important information

The academic parts of this module will be detailed and communicated to you by your university. Please contact them if you have questions regarding this module and its assessments. The module titles in your MSc may not be exactly identical to the work-based modules shown in the e-portfolio. Your modules will be aligned, however, to ensure that your academic and work-based learning are complimentary.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Reflect upon a range of patients referred for prosthetic rehabilitation, the care and treatment pathways and teams involved in prosthetic rehabilitation from initial consultation, consent for treatment, through to completion of treatment.
  2. Evaluate the radiobiological application and principles of radiotherapy, the effects of radiotherapy on tissues, treatment planning and simulation in relation to facial prosthetics.
  3. Explain the potential routes of transmission of infectious agents in clinical practice, mechanisms for prevention of infection, the scientific principles of decontamination and disinfection and their relevance to health and safety principles.
  4. Analyse and critically appraise design factors related to the anatomical site and the materials/biomaterials and applications in the manufacture of custom-made devices in the management of patients requiring facial prosthetics.
  5. Discuss the physical and psychological factors associated with altered body image and the treatments and support mechanisms available for patients with facial deformities, including psychological assessment and their response to illness.
