Aim of this module
To provide trainees with the necessary theoretical background and practical skills to:
- Safely assess and manage adults who access audiology services with hearing difficulties, without co-morbidities.
- Assist with the assessment of adults who have balance problems, and to understand the principles behind, and begin to manage, adults who have vestibular disorders.
- Safely assess school age children who have a suspected or confirmed hearing impairment and assist with the assessment of infants and pre-school children who have suspected or confirmed hearing problems.

- Perform stage A calibration and room set-up in preparation for hearing assessment on a pre-school age child.
- Safely and accurately conduct a real ear measurement.
- Safely perform tympanomentry and full diagnostic acoustic reflexes on an adult patient.
- Safely and accurately conduct a pure tone audiogram including air and bone conduction testing and masking.
- Perform stage A checks on a caloric irrigator.
Observed Clinical Event Titles
- Explain the results of a routine hearing assessment to an adult patient.
- Discuss a potential patient referral with a colleague from the multidisciplinary team.
- Explain the caloric test procedure to a patient and obtain verbal consent to proceed.
- Explain the functions of a hearing aid to a patient/parent/carer.
- Guide a patient through completion of an appropriate patient reported outcome measure.

Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
Activities
- Attend an Audiology patient focus group.
- Complete a short (2-3 day) observational secondment with a regional cochlear implant programme.
- Attend a multidisciplinary team meeting to appreciate the requirements to present a case.
