Aim of this module
This module aims to introduce trainees to the concepts required for service delivery and development within healthcare services. Trainees will develop an understanding of the processes involved in setting up and maintaining a new service and integrating this into an existing laboratory management structure.

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

- Describe the basis of economic evaluation of a health service technology and undertake a cost-benefit analysis.
- Critically evaluate technologies and service developments relevant to genetic and genomic testing.
- Apply an effective project management strategy for a bioinformatic development including a risk analysis.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of the ethical and governance concerns regarding service development in the NHS.
- Critically evaluate guidelines and standards which are relevant to bioinformatics services including the importance of validation and accreditation.
- Plan and deliver training to bioinformaticians.
- Present proposals and reports for non-bioinformatics staff using appropriate language and formats.
- Describe the principles of data interoperability in the NHS and healthcare.

Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
Activities

- Appreciate the interface between clinical bioinformatics and health informatics.
- Attend a meeting/conference where future bioinformatics methods and their translation into practice are discussed.
- Shadow Clinical Bioinformaticians in discussions about service development with external providers or organisation wide services.
