Aim of this module

The aim of this module is to give the trainees an understanding of the role of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) as an organ support technique within critical care. This will include an understanding of which patients require CRRT, how they will benefit from the technique and what the risk factors associated with it are. They will also be able to explain the equipment, common modalities, pre connection considerations and settings used in the therapy.

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate CRRT and the underpinning evidence.
  2. Explain the clinical and technical issues involved in the effective application of CRRT.

  • Modes of CRRT (SCUF, CVVH, CVVHD, CVVHDF).
  • Principles, application, management and clinical risks of CRRT.
  • Convection and diffusion.
  • Use of pressure, flow and air detection monitoring during the safe use of CRRT.
  • Equipment – circuits, machines and components.
  • Anticoagulation techniques during CRRT.
  • Available options and risks associated with the patient during circuit anticoagulation.
  • Issues with extra corporeal circuits.
  • Key areas presenting risks to the patient’s wellbeing associated with extra corporeal circuits.
  • Available options and risks associated with patient therapy prescription during CRRT.
  • Infection prevention and control considerations.
  • Risk management during CRRT.
  • Settings and prescriptions during CRRT.
  • Alarms and troubleshooting during CRRT.
  • Evidence base around the application of CRRT.

Clinical experiences

Important information

Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
