Aim of this module

This module provides trainees with the advanced knowledge and understanding that underpins patient transfers in critical care. This module will enable critical care trainees to provide physiological monitoring and maintain continuous ventilation of critically ill patients during intra or interhospital transfer. The module highlights the importance of recognising and responding to contraindications and patient transfer prerequisites, while simultaneously remaining mindful of any patient history and acuity. The trainee will be expected to communicate effectively with the patients, those involved in their care and the multi-disciplinary team at every opportunity.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the technical, clinical and environmental challenges faced when performing the transfer of critically ill patients outside the critical care environment.
  2. Explain how to assess a patient’s physiological, ventilatory monitoring and additional therapeutic requirements in order to complete patient transfer.
  3. Critically analyse technical and clinical data to perform equipment troubleshooting during patient transfer.

Clinical experiences

Important information

Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.

Activities

  3. Attend a risk meeting discussing incidents relating to equipment.
  4. Attend a meeting to discuss revision of transport SOPs.
