Aim of this module
This module will introduce trainees to the principles of Clinical Microbiology in the hospital and community. Trainees will gain an appreciation of the practice of Clinical Microbiology, including the multidisciplinary team involved in providing care.

Observed Communication Event Titles
- Gather a patient history or information about a patient relevant to the specialty from a patient, patient representative, or a member of the multidisciplinary team.
- Present a patient history or information about a patient relevant to the specialty to a member of the multidisciplinary team.
- Under supervision, communicate a diagnostic microbiology result to a member of the patient’s clinical team.
- Convey requests for additional diagnostic tests from an MDT meeting/ward round to the microbiology laboratory.

- Describe the partnership between Clinical Microbiology and other clinical specialisms and agencies in the investigation of infectious disease in the community and hospital setting.
- Critically evaluate the design, operation, and performance of point of care and rapid diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.
- Discuss the aetiology, pathogenesis, and presentation of infectious disease in the community and hospital.
- Explain the partnership between Clinical Microbiology and other clinical specialisms and agencies in antimicrobial stewardship.
- Evaluate the development and adoption of antimicrobial policies and guidelines at local and national levels.
Indicative content
- Aetiology and presentation, including sources and routes of transmission of infectious disease in the community and hospital-acquired infection (HAI).
- The laboratory investigation of infection in the community, including testing at the point of care and rapid diagnostic tests.
- Guidelines for the optimum treatment of hospital-acquired and community-based infection.
- The role of the antimicrobial pharmacist.
- Antimicrobial stewardship.
- Interpretation and reporting of results, including statutory notification.
- Epidemiological modelling in the community.
Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
