Aim of this module
This module aims to develop the practical skills and theoretical understanding to dissect non-malignant histological specimens from a range of human organ systems to provide diagnostic and prognostic information for clinicians managing patient care.

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:
- Discuss the sampling and dissection techniques and block selection for non-malignant disease diagnosis.
- Evaluate the range of additional tests used in cellular pathology in the diagnosis of non-malignant disease.
- Critically analyse the current research and range of new treatments for non-malignant disease processes.
Indicative content
- Principles of non-malignant dissection, inking and block selection.
- Use of additional tests to diagnose non-malignant disease, e.g. tinctorial and IHC.
- Treatments for a range of non-malignant diseases from gastrointestinal, gynaecological, skin, breast and urological organ systems, including traditional and targeted therapies.
- Research/trials for a range of non-malignant diseases from gastrointestinal, gynaecological, skin, breast and urological organ systems.
Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
Activities
- Attend a multidisciplinary team meeting discussing a case you have dissected, to appreciate the role of histopathology in patient management.
- Attend a clinic dealing with cases that you may subsequently dissect to appreciate the patient experience of their care.
