Aim of this module
This module will develop trainees’ practical skills and theoretical understanding to perform, troubleshoot and manage specialised areas within the histopathology laboratory.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:
- Discuss the principles and applications of specialised histochemical, tinctorial and immunofluorescent techniques.
- Critically discuss the range of EQA, IQA and UKAS schemes used and their importance within cellular pathology.
- Evaluate and discuss current national cancer screening programmes.
Indicative content
- Theory of histochemical, tinctorial techniques and immunofluorescence.
- Comparison of national screening programmes.
- Principles of IQA, EQA and accreditation schemes in cellular pathology.
- Importance and impact of the HTA.
- Financial/business aspects, e.g. managed service contracts, business cases, funding bids, costing, outgoings and creating an income stream.
Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
Activities
- Attend a multidisciplinary team relating to a case where you have performed and interpreted the tinctorial, histochemical, or immunohistochemical staining to appreciate the role of members of the multidisciplinary team and the impact of histopathology on patient management and the patient pathway.
- Meet with the designated individual for the Human Tissue Act (HTA) to appreciate their role in ensuring compliance to the HTA, reporting incidents and their legal responsibilities.
- Attend a diagnostic and/or therapeutic clinic to appreciate the patient pathway and patient experience of their care.
- Attend a cancer management team meeting where data on waiting times and performance targets for cancer treatments are discussed to appreciate the collection of data and reporting requirements.
- Attend a meeting discussing capacity planning/turnaround times in relation to cancer diagnosis.
