Aim of this module
This module aims to enable trainees to create test plans, perform additional advanced electrophysiological tests, interpret and report the results to another health professional and combine electrophysiology results with retinal imaging findings to inform a diagnosis. Trainees will be exposed to and participate in delivery of safe and effective patient centered care.

Academic content (MSc in Clinical Science)
Important information
The academic parts of this module will be detailed and communicated to you by your university. Please contact them if you have questions regarding this module and its assessments. The module titles in your MSc may not be exactly identical to the work-based modules shown in the e-portfolio. Your modules will be aligned, however, to ensure that your academic and work-based learning are complimentary.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:
- Critique academic literature and technical information regarding measurement techniques and pathology to formulate strategies to adopt in clinical practice.
- Critically analyse the waveforms from multifocal ERG and multichannel VEP and be able to effectively communicate to a patient how the waveform relates to retinal pathology.
Indicative content
A detailed understanding of the science and professional guidelines on:
- Data models and optimisation
- Calibration – techniques and frequency
- Equipment and safety – risk analysis and clinic setup
- Extended protocols – established protocols and methodology for evaluating and adopting new approached
- Principles of multifocal ERG and multichannel VEPs
- Filter settings and amplifications – specific for different clinical instrumentation
- Analysis techniques – critique of approaches
- Appropriate test types for different pathologies and disease – review of the academic literature on emerging techniques
- ERG stimuli and separation of different responses
Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
Activities
- Observe electrophysiology procedures outside the department e.g. in a theatre visit, neurophysiology theatre visit or on a ward.
- Attend a research clinic.
- Attend a follow up clinic for a patient seen in the electrophysiology department.
- Attend a uveitis clinic.
- Attend an intravitreal injection clinic.
- Attend a botulinum clinic.
- Attend a neuro-ophthalmology clinic.
