Academic content (MSc in Clinical Science)

Important information

The academic parts of this module will be detailed and communicated to you by your university. Please contact them if you have questions regarding this module and its assessments. The module titles in your MSc may not be exactly identical to the work-based modules shown in the e-portfolio. Your modules will be aligned, however, to ensure that your academic and work-based learning are complimentary.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Identify the range of patients referred for orthognathic surgery, care pathways and teams involved for elective surgery applying the local and national legislation applicable to craniofacial devices.
  2. Explain the potential routes of transmission of infectious agents in surgical/clinical practice mechanisms for the prevention of infection, the scientific principles of decontamination and disinfection and their relevance to health and safety polices and the practice of reconstructive science.
  3. Apply integrative knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the head and neck to the assessment, classification, management and treatment of patients requiring orthognathic surgery.
  4. Critically evaluate the selection of materials and used in orthognathic surgery with a focus of understanding their selection, material parameters and limitations.
  5. Analyse, evaluate and classify facial deformities using manual and digital imaging techniques and justify the various technologies in relation to device manufacture for orthognathic surgery.
