Aim of this module

Trainees will gain the specialist knowledge and skills required to perform video urodynamics investigations. Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in the investigation of patients with complex urinary tract dysfunction using patient centered practice and evidence-based practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the range of equipment used in urodynamic science, including video-urodynamics and the application of ionising radiation-based investigations and contrast medium usage.
  2. Integrate the findings from clinical history and examination to suggest potential pathophysiology affecting the urinary tract and propose an appropriate choice of urodynamic investigation.
  3. Interpret the results from video-urodynamics in a range of patients and make recommendations for treatment and follow-up.
  4. Articulate the key findings of neurogenic bladder dysfunction.
  5. Critically evaluate the effect of neurological conditions on male and female gastrointestinal, sexual and reproductive function recognising the potential impact of these conditions for patients.

Clinical experiences

Important information

Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.

Activities

  1. Attend a paediatric video urodynamics clinic.
  2. Observe radiological procedures related to pelvic floor e.g. proctograms.
  3. Attend a gynaecology clinic where urodynamic care is discussed.
  4. Attend and observe the radiation safety and reporting practices for the x-ray equipment used in video urodynamics.
  5. Attend a community clinic for patients with urodynamic conditions.
