Module objective
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will be able to analyse, synthesise and apply their expert knowledge and understanding to the application of bioinformatics for clinical diagnostics and therapeutics. They will manage a project to validate and implement a bioinformatics method to form part of routine diagnostic processes. Measures will be taken to ensure continuity of service and maintain quality.
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will be able to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and critically apply their expert knowledge to translational research, including:
- Advances in the field of Clinical Bioinformatics that are directly applicable to clinical diagnostics or therapeutics.
- The importance of translational research to improve healthcare and healthcare services.
- The role of data collection and analysis for formation of evidence-based guidelines.
- Challenges for implementing outcomes from translational research into clinical workflows.
- Multinational research and non-UK funding opportunities.
- Protection of research data on conclusion of the project in order to defend any relevant publication and/or challenge to the research findings.
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will have a critical understanding of current evidence and its application to the performance and mastery of a range of technical skills and will be able to:
- Design a project to validate a method for data analysis that will be incorporated into a routine diagnostic workflow.
- Perform the validation study, assess results and report the outcome, including examining the limitations of the study, and propose any improvements to the validation process within quality assurance structures.
- Manage implementation and integration of the new method following successful validation, with the involvement of key stakeholders across all areas of the diagnostic service affected by the change.
- Measure the improvements resulting from implementation from a service wide perspective.
By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will be expected to critically reflect and apply in practice a range of clinical and communication skills to communicate effectively with the public, patients, carers, clinicians, academics and other healthcare professionals, and will be able to:
- Lead regular multiprofessional meetings to manage successful validation and implementation projects, involving patients, carers and the public, if appropriate.
- Present the process and outcomes from validation and/or implementation of new bioinformatics process to peers.
