Module objective
By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect of introduction to anaemia, be able to:
- analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
- perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
- demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.
Knowledge and understanding
- Selection and validation of appropriate tests
- Scientific quality assurance of test procedures
- Validity and reliability of test results and their application
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to:
- the pathophysiology and diagnosis of anaemia
- the laboratory techniques required for the investigation of anaemia
- the underlying causes of anaemia.
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance of the following technical procedures and laboratory skills:
- interpret the various causes of anaemia including:
- iron deficiency
- megaloblastic anaemia
- congenital and acquired haemolytic anaemia
- haemoglobinopathies
- anaemia of chronic disorders
- neonatal anaemia
- formulate a differential diagnosis in individual cases.
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply knowledge of anaemia to perform the clinical skills necessary to manage under supervision:
- to advise appropriately on the tests required to investigate a patient with anaemia including:
- iron deficiency
- megaloblastic anaemia
- congenital and acquired haemolytic anaemia
- anaemia of chronic disorders.
