Title
Adverse Reactions to Platelet and Granulocyte Transfusion Therapy
Type
Stage Two
Module code
HLS193
Requirement
Compulsory

Module objective

By the end of the training period with respect to adverse reactions to platelet and granulocyte transfusion therapy, the trainee will be able to:

  • analyse, synthesise, critically evaluate and apply knowledge
  • perform, adapt and master a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
  • demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level

Knowledge and understanding

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to:

  • the presentation and pathogenesis of:
    • refractoriness to random donor platelet transfusion
    • post-transfusion purpura
    • transfusion-associated graft-versus host disease
    • transfusion-related acute lung injury
    • disseminated intravascular coagulation
  • the investigation and diagnosis of the above disorders
  • the maintenance of an HLA-typed platelet donor panel
  • the selection and provision of HLA-selected platelets

Technical and clinical skills

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance, adaptation and mastery of the adverse reactions to platelet and granulocyte transfusion therapy and will:

  • select, direct and interpret laboratory tests to support the diagnosis of adverse reactions to blood transfusion therapy

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply their expert knowledge of the adverse reactions to platelet and granulocyte transfusion therapy to perform, adapt and master the clinical skills necessary to provide advice to clinical colleagues on:

  • the selection of blood, blood products and components for patients who have reacted adversely to transfusion and
  • the contraindications of transfusion provide advice on patients at risk of adverse reactions to blood products and
  • on component selection and/or secondary processing to avoid transfusion-associated graft
  • versus host disease, and transfusion-associated circulatory overload
