Module objective
By the end of the training period with respect to therapeutic apheresis, the trainee will be able to:
- analyse, synthesise, critically evaluate and apply knowledge
- perform, adapt and master a range of clinical skills and procedures
- demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, critically evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to:
- the range of therapeutic apheresis procedures including:
- therapeutic plasma exchange
- red cell exchange
- peripheral blood stem cell collection
- granulocyte collection
- platelet depletion
- leukocyte depletion
- low density lipid removal
- extracorporeal photopheresis
- adsorption of ABO and HLA antibodies
- the primary indications for therapeutic apheresis:
- apheresis as accepted first line therapy (eg Guillian-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura)
- apheresis as accepted second line therapy (eg. extracorporeal photophoresis for chronic graft versus host disease)
- apheresis prescribed on an individualised basis
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply knowledge of therapeutic apheresis to perform, adapt and master the clinical skills necessary to:
- advise clinical colleagues on the use of a range of therapeutic apheresis procedures in patients and donors
