Module objective
By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect of presentation and management of respiratory tract infections including infections of the ENT, be able to:
- analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
- perform, adapt and master a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures and
- demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice with respect to the predisposing factors, presentation, microbial causes, differential diagnoses and management (including infection control where appropriate) of respiratory tract infections including infections of the ENT including:
- pneumonia (community- and hospital-acquired)
- pleural effusion, lung abscess and empyema
- tuberculosis
- influenza
- lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in patients with chronic lung disease including cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and COPD
- LRTI in the immunocompromised patient
- viral LRTI and bronchiolitis
- upper RTI
- ENT infections
- prevention of respiratory tract infection by vaccination.
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance, adaptation and mastery to make a microbial diagnosis of respiratory tract and ENT infections including immunocompromised patients and patients with cystic fibrosis, COPD and bronchiectasis.
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply knowledge of presentation and management of respiratory tract infections including infections of the ENT to perform, adapt and master the clinical skills necessary to:
- liaise with the clinical team on the diagnosis and management including antimicrobial treatment of the patient with respiratory tract and ENT infections
- liaise with all health professionals including health protection personnel as appropriate regarding the management of contacts and public health management.
