- Type
- Stage Two
- Module code
- HLS269
- Requirement
- Compulsory
Module objective
By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to developing skills and knowledge required for understanding the presentation and management of hospital infection control, the structure and practices of infection control teams and the pathogens that cause nosocomial infection, be able to:
- analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
- perform, adapt and master a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures and
- demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practise as a Consultant Clinical Scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practise at this level
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to:
- The structure and practices of infection control
- Relevant legislation and guidance that relates to hospital acquired infection
- Pathogens that cause nosocomial infection
- Surveillance of hospital-acquired infection
- Outbreak investigation
- The value of molecular methods for detection and characterisation of pathogens
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance, adaptation and mastery of the following technical procedures and laboratory skills:
- Molecular detection of pathogens in clinical and environmental samples (e.g. PCR for Legionella)
- Molecular typing methods such as:
- Ribotyping
- Multi-locus sequence typing
- spa typing
By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply knowledge of hospital infection control to perform, adapt and master the clinical skills necessary to:
- communicate with clinicians and members of the infection control team
- advise on the application of molecular tests for surveillance and outbreak investigation
- be able to interpret and communicate results.
Attitudes and behaviours
This module has no attitude and behaviours information.
