Requirement
Compulsory

Module objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to a thorough understanding, theoretical and practical, of the knowledge, theoretical skills and clinical skills necessary to be proficient in the scientific and technical aspects  of HSCT, be able to:

  • analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
  • perform, adapt and master a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures and
  • demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practise as a Consultant Clinical Scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practise at this level.

Knowledge and understanding

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate the ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise relevant knowledge and its application to their professional practice in relation to:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of the different sources of stem cells used in current HSCT practice
  • HLA and non-HLA factors relevant to the different types of HSCT
  • Criteria for selection and matching of recipients and stem cell donors
  • Relevance of loss of HLA heterozygosity in related and unrelated donor selection and post-transplant relapse.
  • Clinical indications, complications and factors affecting outcome for HSCT
  • Appropriate H&I tests required for patient and donor pre-transplant work-up
  • Lineage-specific chimaerism and post-transplant monitoring
  • Immunological mechanisms of
    • Graft versus host disease and graft versus leukaemia effect
    • Rejection and relapse in haematopoietic stem cell transplants.

Technical and clinical skills

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current relevant research, theory and knowledge and its application to the performance, adaptation and mastery of the following skills:

  • Selection of an appropriate range of compatibility tests for the pre-transplant workup of recipients and donors.
  • Selection of the appropriate range of post-transplant monitoring
  • Understanding of the unrelated donor/cord blood search and selection process according to the clinical needs of the transplant
  • Reporting results and providing relevant clinical commentary where necessary.

By the end of the training period the trainee will be able to apply knowledge of the general principles of the techniques used in the application of HSCT to perform, adapt and master the clinical skills necessary to manage and to understand:

  • The principles of donor selection.
