Module objective
By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:
- Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
- Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
- Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

- Demonstrates understanding of various specimens obtained for example via:
- Oesophagectomy
- Gastrectomy
- Antrectomy
- Polypectomy
- EMR
- Demonstrates understanding of commonly encountered neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease processes. For example:
- Helicobacter-associated gastritis
- Reactive gastritis
- Barrett’s oesophagus
- Oesophageal carcinoma
- Gastric carcinoma
- Coeliac disease
- Duodenitis
- GIST
- Neuroendocrine tumours
Technical and clinical skills
- Able to interpret and report endoscopic biopsies
- Recognises common diseases, for example:
- Helicobacter-associated gastritis
- Oesophageal and gastric malignancy, etc.
- Describes, dissects, and reports oesophageal and gastric resection specimens
