Module objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:

  • Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
  • Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
  • Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrates understanding of various specimens obtained for example via:
    • Oesophagectomy
    • Gastrectomy
    • Antrectomy
    • Polypectomy
    • EMR

 

  • Demonstrates understanding of commonly encountered neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease processes. For example:
    • Helicobacter-associated gastritis
    • Reactive gastritis
    • Barrett’s oesophagus
    • Oesophageal carcinoma
    • Gastric carcinoma
    • Coeliac disease
    • Duodenitis
    • GIST
    • Neuroendocrine tumours

Technical and clinical skills

  • Able to interpret and report endoscopic biopsies
  • Recognises common diseases, for example:
    • Helicobacter-associated gastritis
    • Oesophageal and gastric malignancy, etc.
  • Describes, dissects, and reports oesophageal and gastric resection specimens
