Module objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:

• Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
• Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
• Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

Knowledge and understanding

• Demonstrates understanding of specimens obtained for example via:
  • Mucosal biopsy
  • Tonsillectomy
  • Nasal polypectomy
  • Salivary gland tumour resections
  • Radical neck dissection
• Demonstrates understanding of commonly encountered neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease processes, for example:
  • Simple nasal polyps
  • Reactive, benign, and malignant conditions of the tonsils
  • Salivary gland tumours such as pleomorphic adenoma, adenocarcinoma, Warthin’s tumour
  • Tumours of the nasopharynx and larynx

Technical and clinical skills

• Able to describe, dissect and report tonsillectomy, polypectomy, salivary gland biopsies and resections, lymph node excisions, neck dissections, biopsies from the pharynx, larynx, and upper respiratory tract
• Recognises reactive changes in tonsils and distinguishes from high-grade lymphoma
