Module objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:

  • Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
  • Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
  • Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrates understanding of specimens obtained via:
    • Prostate biopsies and chippings
    • Orchidectomy and if available prostatectomy specimens
  • Demonstrates understanding of commonly encountered neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease processes, for example:
    • Prostatic adenocarcinoma
    • Benign prostatic hyperplasia
    • Testicular tumors such as germ cell tumours

Technical and clinical skills

  • Reports normal vas deferens
  • Recognises presence of PIN and cancer in prostatic needle biopsies
  • Describes, dissects and reports orchidectomy specimens
  • Recognises seminoma, embryonal carcinoma, and other testicular tumours
