Module objective
By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:
- Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
- Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
- Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.
Knowledge and understanding
- Demonstrates understanding of the correlation of pathologic soft tissue lesions with their clinical and radiological appearances
- Demonstrates understanding of commonly encountered neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease processes, for example:
- Lipoma
- Angiolipoma
- Neurofibroma
- Dermatofibroma
- Inflammatory pathology
- Other benign, hamartomatous, indeterminate, and malignant soft tissue lesions
- Demonstrates knowledge of immunohistochemical techniques to apply
- Understands the value of cytogenetics
Technical and clinical skills
- Recognises morphological features suggestive of main subtypes of tumours (i.e., lipomatous, fibromatous, myomatous, neural, vascular characteristics)
- Recognises inflammatory lesions and mimics
- Recognises high-grade sarcoma
