Module objective

By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:

  • Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
  • Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
  • Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrates understanding of the correlation of pathologic soft tissue lesions with their clinical and radiological appearances
  • Demonstrates understanding of commonly encountered neoplastic and non-neoplastic disease processes, for example:
    • Lipoma
    • Angiolipoma
    • Neurofibroma
    • Dermatofibroma
    • Inflammatory pathology
    • Other benign, hamartomatous, indeterminate, and malignant soft tissue lesions
  • Demonstrates knowledge of immunohistochemical techniques to apply
  • Understands the value of cytogenetics

Technical and clinical skills

  • Recognises morphological features suggestive of main subtypes of tumours (i.e., lipomatous, fibromatous, myomatous, neural, vascular characteristics)
  • Recognises inflammatory lesions and mimics
  • Recognises high-grade sarcoma
