Module objective
By the end of the training period trainees will, in respect to background and principles, be able to:
- Analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge
- Perform a range of technical and clinical skills and procedures
- Demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for professional practice as a consultant clinical scientist dealing with the complexities, uncertainties and tensions of professional practice at this level.

- Identifies the origins and consequences of germline variation and somatic mutations, including DNA methylation and gene expression changes
Fundamentals of Genetics
- Identifies the structure of genes including translation and transcription, factors affecting gene expression and inheritance patterns

- Identifies molecular techniques
Molecular Tests
- Describes molecular tests currently performed on histological samples
Technical and clinical skills
Fundamentals of Molecular Biology
- Demonstrates the origins of and justifications for molecular tests
Fundamentals of Genetics
- Recognises the factors affecting transcription and translation
Molecular Techniques
- Demonstrates awareness of principles, practical knowledge of sequencing, PCR, microarrays (DNA and RNA), in situ hybridisation and mutation detection
