Module objective
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST, with respect to the presentation and management of patients with stable pulmonary vascular diseases, will be able to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply their knowledge, to undertake specialist assessment and management of patients with stable pulmonary vascular diseases, including previous pulmonary embolism and infarction, stable secondary pulmonary hypertension, previous pulmonary haemorrhage and pulmonary vasculitides within the scope of a Consultant Clinical Scientist.
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will analyse, synthesise, evaluate and critically apply their expert knowledge required with respect to the:
- causes of pulmonary vascular diseases.
- differential diagnosis of pulmonary vascular diseases.
- investigation of pulmonary vascular diseases, including D-dimer, V/Q scanning, CTPA, role of echocardiography in consultation with medical colleagues.
- assessment of disease severity.
- pharmacology of drugs used in pulmonary vascular diseases.
- complications of pulmonary vascular disease.
- relevant guidelines.
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will be expected to critically reflect and apply in practice a range of clinical and communication skills to advise and communicate effectively with patients with stable pulmonary vascular disease, relevant clinicians, patients and the public and other healthcare professionals and will:
- interpret appropriate Lung Function Tests.
- (limited) interpretation of echocardiography reports.
- (limited) interpretation of CXR/VQ Scan/CTPA/ HRCT, in consultation with medical colleagues.
Attitudes and behaviours
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will be expected to evaluate their own response to both normal and complex situations demonstrating the professional attributes and insights required of a Consultant Clinical Scientist working within the limits of professional competence referring as appropriate to senior staff and will determine the urgency of the clinical presentation and when to request assistance from medical colleagues and will:
- quickly escalate care when necessary and to determine the appropriate environment for care –ward/HDU/ICU in collaboration with medical colleagues.
