Module objective
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will be able to analyse, synthesise, critically evaluate and apply knowledge of paediatric neurophysiology to underpin specialist Consultant Clinical Scientist practice and be competent in the application of this knowledge. They will be competent to identify the specialist assessments required to form a structured differential diagnosis and will undertake diagnostic testing in paediatric patients within a patient-focused service. They should consistently demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours necessary for the role of a Consultant Clinical Scientist working within their scope of practice.
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will analyse, synthesise, critically evaluate and apply their knowledge with respect to the:
- common, behavioural, emotional and psychosocial aspects of illness in paediatric patients and their families;
- application of appropriate neurophysiological diagnostic testing in paediatric age;
- consistent application of child protection standards and practice for paediatric patients undergoing neurophysiological diagnostic testing;
- protecting paediatric patients and vulnerable adults from maltreatment, abuse, neglect, or exploitation (safeguarding).
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST, with respect to paediatric neurophysiology, will perform EEG and evoked potential recordings in paediatric patients and write a technical report. They will also be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current research and its application to the performance of EEG and evoked potentials.
By the end of this module the Clinical Scientist in HSST will be expected to critically reflect and apply knowledge in practice to a range of clinical and communication skills to:
- recognise and respond to behavioural, emotional and psychosocial aspects of illness in paediatric patients and their families;
- identify and critically evaluate the application of appropriate neurophysiological diagnostic testing in paediatric patients;
- interpret recordings and produce a supervised clinical report.
Attitudes and behaviours
This module has no attitude and behaviours information.
