Module objective
By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST, with respect to non-organic hearing difficulties, will be able to analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply knowledge and perform a specialist assessment and treatment of patients presenting with a non-organic hearing loss demonstrating the attitudes and behaviours necessary for the role of a Consultant Clinical Scientist within a patient focused service and in particular will be able to detect, investigate, diagnose and manage non-organic hearing difficulties in children.
Knowledge and understanding
By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will analyse, synthesise, evaluate and apply their expert knowledge with respect to:
- the factors in presentation which are commonly seen in non-organic hearing difficulties.
- the need to consider that auditory processing difficulties and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder can present as non-organic hearing loss.
- the audiological test battery to investigate non-organic hearing loss.
- correct management of non-organic hearing difficulties.
- when to refer for further medical opinions and to other allied professionals.
- Child safeguarding and local pathways.
Technical and clinical skills
By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of current research and its application to the performance and mastery of a range of technical skills whilst critically reflecting and applying in practice a range of clinical and communication skills to advise and communicate effectively with children, their families or carers and other healthcare professionals and will:
- take an accurate history, including psychological factors and educational achievement, and carry out an accurate audiovestibular examination as appropriate in the role of Consultant Clinical Scientist
- select and interpret the appropriate audiological tests to assess the child.
- identify accurately the non-organic presentation and the possible underlying triggers for this behaviour.
- implement appropriate management and refer for educational, psychological or psychiatric or social services input as appropriate.
- assess benefits and problems of intervention correctly.
- reflect on the challenges of applying research to practice in relation to these areas of practice and suggest improvements, building on a critique of available evidence.
Attitudes and behaviours
By the end of this module Clinical Scientists in HSST will be expected to evaluate their own response to both normal and complex situations demonstrating the professional attributes and insights required of a Clinical Scientist in HSST working within the limits of professional competence referring as appropriate to senior staff and will:
- recognise the importance of involvement of other professionals in the management of children with non-organic hearing difficulties.
- act sensitivity towards parents’/carers’ and patient’s response to a ‘non-organic’ diagnosis.
- recognise the importance of child safeguarding.
- be committed to and support continuous improvement of therapeutic services, with particular reference to auditing practice, evidence based practice, innovative, new and improved technologies.
