Reflective practice guidance

The guidance below is provided to support reflection at different time points, providing you with questions to aid you to reflect for this training activity. They are provided for guidance and should not be considered as a mandatory checklist. Trainees should not be expected to provide answers to each of the guidance questions listed.

Before action

  • What specific area of practice e.g., knowledge, communication skills, or understanding of the wider NHS, requires development?
  • What do you anticipate you will learn from addressing this need?
  • What actions will you take in preparation, such as identifying relevant resources or accessing different types of learning experiences, and how will you ensure your aims are specific and measurable?

In action

While discussing and drafting the plan, consider:

  • What decisions are you making regarding the scope and nature of the development opportunity (e.g., single event or a series of events) as the plan progresses?
  • Are you ensuring the plan directly addresses how the development will ultimately lead to benefits for patients or improve the quality of your practice?
  • How are you adapting the plan based on the input and guidance sought from your training officer?

On action

  • What were the key development areas and aims that were agreed upon? What specific skills e.g., critical review of self-practice, planning, or self-assessment of needs did you develop or improve during this activity?
  • What specific ‘next steps’ will you take to begin implementing the plan and accessing the identified learning opportunities?

Beyond action

  • How does the experience of developing this self-directed plan reinforce your personal responsibility for continuing professional development?
  • How might the transferable skills gained (self-direction, planning) support you in preparing for observed ‘in-person’ assessments?
  • How will you apply this initial planning knowledge to critically review and update your development needs throughout your future career as a Clinical Scientist?
