Use laboratory methods and protocols related to epidemiological surveillance and outbreak investigation to produce evidence of an infection outbreak from each of these sources.
Considerations
- Discuss the basics of epidemiology and their practical applications in research.
- Explain the basic statistical terms and their use in study designs.
- Describe the principles of data collection and sampling.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a number of different study designs and their application to different areas of research, e.g. case control studies; cross-sectional studies; cohort studies; intervention studies; qualitative studies.
- Describe the need for ethics approval and understand the process for applying for approval.
- Be able to present data in a meaningful manner.
- The reporting process for patients being investigated as part of a local infection outbreak.
