Perform laboratory investigations to contribute to investigation of at least two of the following:

  • malaria
  • haemorrhagic fever
  • pandemic influenza
  • common tropical infections.

  • Common measures for preventing infection in travellers and their appropriate use:
    • travel vaccination
    • malaria prophylaxis
    • mosquito and tick bite prevention
    • food and water precautions.
  • The aetiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of malaria, including:
    • global epidemiology and risk
    • laboratory diagnosis
    • prevention and treatment
  • The aetiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of viral haemorrhagic fevers, including:
    • global epidemiology and risk
    • laboratory diagnosis and risk assessment
    • management (laboratory and clinical)
    • national guidance (e.g. HSE, ACDP)
    • national reference laboratories/infectious diseases units.
  • Pandemic influenza, including:
    • the role of the clinical laboratory
    • collaboration between national and international agencies
    • the state of preparedness.
  • The aetiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of:
    • schistosomiasis
    • filariasis
    • trypanosomiasis
    • gastrointestinal parasites
    • dengue fever
    • yellow fever
    • tuberculosis
    • HIV
    • enteric fever
    • cholera
    • dysentery.
