Perform a standard transthoracic echocardiogram in an adult patient, optimising image quality and identifying artefacts

Considerations

  • Common presenting conditions and pathological processes underlying the presentation of patients referred for these procedures
  • Standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the procedure
  • Recognise normal variants, for example, Eustachian valve, Chiari network and left ventricular tendon
  • Rationale for specific test selection
  • Optimisation of image quality and the use of correct frequency, frame rate, focus, sector width, depth and gain
  • Identification of common artefacts
  • Storage of images from standard acoustic windows in accordance with local or national protocol
