Learning outcomes

# Learning outcome
1

Identify, design and develop services for bioinformatics to meet stakeholders needs.

2

Prepare feasibility studies and evaluate risk for developments in bioinformatics services.

3

Summarise the benefits and risks of developments in bioinformatics appropriately to stakeholders.

4

Plan to efficiently integrate service developments in bioinformatics with existing practices.

5

Critically appraise new technologies and methods objectively.

6

Prepare and deliver training to end-users for developments in bioinformatics services.

7

Practice in accordance with relevant standards and guidance.

Clinical experiences

Clinical experiences help you to develop insight into your practice and a greater understanding of your specialty's impact on patient care. Clinical experiences should be included in your training plan and you may be asked to help organise your experiences. Reflections and observations from your experiences may help you to advance your practice and can be used to develop evidence to demonstrate your awareness and appreciation of your specialty.

Activities

  1. Meet with and appreciate the role of the manager responsible for business and service development and budget management.
  2. Appreciate the interface between clinical bioinformatics and health informatics.
  3. Attend a meeting/conference where future bioinformatics methods and their translation into practice are discussed.
  4. Shadow Clinical Bioinformaticians in discussions about service development with external providers or organisation wide services.

Academic content (MSc in Clinical Science)

Important information

The academic parts of this module will be detailed and communicated to you by your university. Please contact them if you have questions regarding this module and its assessments. The module titles in your MSc may not be exactly identical to the work-based modules shown in the e-portfolio. Your modules will be aligned, however, to ensure that your academic and work-based learning are complimentary.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to identify stakeholders and capture user requirements for a service implementation.
  2. Describe the basis of economic evaluation of a health service technology and undertake a cost-benefit analysis.
  3. Critically evaluate technologies and service developments relevant to genetic and genomic testing.
  4. Apply an effective project management strategy for a bioinformatic development including a risk analysis.
  5. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the ethical and governance concerns regarding service development in the NHS.
  6. Critically evaluate guidelines and standards which are relevant to bioinformatics services including the importance of validation and accreditation.
  7. Plan and deliver training to bioinformaticians.
  8. Present proposals and reports for non-bioinformatics staff using appropriate language and formats.
  9. Describe the principles of data interoperability in the NHS and healthcare.
