Aim of this module
This module will provide the trainee with knowledge and understanding of the mechanism of autoimmunity. They will understand the clinical presentation and investigation of a range of autoimmune disease. They will become familiar with methods and strategies to investigate autoimmunity and gain experience of the interpretation of patient results in a variety of clinical settings.

Clinical experiences
Important information
Clinical experiential learning is the range of activities trainees may undertake in order to gain the experience and evidence to demonstrate their achievement of module competencies and assessments. The list is not definitive or mandatory, but training officers should ensure, as best training practice, that trainees gain as many of these clinical experiences as possible. They should be included in training plans, and once undertaken they should support the completion of module assessments and competencies within the e-portfolio.
Activities
- Attend a rheumatology clinic to understand the effect of an autoimmune disease on the quality of life of the patient. Reflect on your discussion and identify key learning points that will influence your future practice.
- Attend a range of outpatient clinics that patients with autoimmune diseases may attend and discuss the role and impact of the multi-professional team in the care of such patients. This may include outpatients and primary care chronic disease management clinics.
- Prepare two to three autoimmune patient cases where the results from immunology investigations have altered in response to treatment or where results of immunology investigations influence diagnosis or management.
- Critically appraise the internal quality control and external quality assessment performance of three different methods used in the investigation of autoimmune disorders.
- Contribute to appropriate immunology teaching programmes.
