Programme aim

To provide clinical scientist trainees with strong science-based, patient-centred clinical training in Blood Sciences.

Programme level learning outcomes

Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics

  1. Apply the appropriate testing strategy for patients referred to H&I according to clinical context
  2. Perform the relevant laboratory investigations for a range of patients referred to an H&I laboratory
  3. Interpret test results and prepare clinical reports for a range of patients referred to a H&I laboratory
  4. Apply and adapt skills to communicate effectively with service users and multidisciplinary team.
  5. Practice effectively in partnership with service user, other clinical specialties and the wider MDT to provide a safe and effective H&I service
  6. Appraise new and emerging technologies and clinical advances in the practice of H&I
  7. Practice in accordance with quality management and accreditation standards

  • Training Activities
  • Direct Observation of Practical Skills (DOPS)

Entry routes and requirements

Entry routes In England there are two routes into the programme

  • Direct entry – Trainees are competitively appointed into a training post funded through the local Health Education England training board
  • In-service entry – Trainees enter the programme with the support of their employers.
Entry requirements For both entry routes, STP applicants must participate in the national recruitment process and meet the minimum entry requirements for the programme.
Programme regulations Attendance requirements:

As employees of their host organisation, trainees are required to attend the workplace as required by their employer.

Trainees are required to attend all sessions as specified by the Higher Education Institute.
