  • Certificate of Completion of the Scientist Training Programme (CCSTP). Awarded by the National School of Healthcare Science

  • Apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist.

Programme aim

To provide clinical scientist trainees with strong science-based, patient-centred clinical training in Clinical Pharmaceutical Science.

Programme level learning outcomes

Pharmaceutical Science

  1. Practice, applying a critical understanding of core scientific and regulatory knowledge, within the areas of;
    1. Pharmaceutical Regulations
    2. Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance
    3. Formulation of medicinal products
    4. Manufacture of medicines
    5. Aseptic preparation of sterile medicinal products
    6. Manufacture and preparation of radiopharmaceuticals
    7. Quality Control
  2. Evaluate and apply pharmaceutical quality management system policies and procedures and the principles of quality risk management
  3. Critically analyse issues which arise in the delivery of Pharmaceutical Science services, justifying investigative strategies, identifying and mitigating clinical impact
  4. Practice effectively in partnership with the wider multidisciplinary team and stakeholders to deliver safe, patient centered Pharmaceutical Science services
  5. Apply effective communication with stakeholders of the Pharmaceutical Science service using a variety of methods.
  6. Plan, manage and lead effectively on the requirements of a Pharmaceutical Science service within the context of the NHS

Entry routes and requirements

Entry routes In England there are two routes into the programme

  • Direct entry – Trainees are competitively appointed into a training post funded through the local Health Education England training board
  • In-service entry – Trainees enter the programme with the support of their employers.
Entry requirements For both entry routes, STP applicants must participate in the national recruitment process and meet the minimum entry requirements for the programme.
Programme regulations Attendance requirements:

As employees of their host organisation, trainees are required to attend the workplace as required by their employer.

Trainees are required to attend all sessions as specified by the Higher Education Institute.
