Programme aim
To provide clinical scientist trainees with strong science-based, patient-centred clinical training in Clinical Engineering.
Programme level learning outcomes
Clinical Engineering
- Analyse, visualise and interpret complex systems and data, using statistical analysis, computer modelling and simulation to describe mechanical, electronic, physiological and operational systems.
- Practice effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment to manage patients as an autonomous clinician leading assessment and device prescription across a clinical episode, applying specialist knowledge of clinical/pathological processes.
- Evaluate the patient experience, considering the perspective of patients, families and careers, across a range of specialist service areas.
- Plan and manage the safe use of healthcare technology across its lifecycle, including performance and monitoring techniques, risk management, quality assurance and key legislation.
- Design, develop and evaluate, verifying and validating, the component parts of healthcare technology including software, mechanical components and electronic circuits.
- Identify and facilitate innovation, through collation and analysis of evidence and modelling of the impact on patients and healthcare systems, financial and operational functions.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including patients, carers and other members of the multidisciplinary clinical team, in order to understand and address stakeholder requirements and provide clear training and education.

Entry routes and requirements
Entry routes | In England there are two routes into the programme
|
---|---|
Entry requirements | For both entry routes, STP applicants must participate in the national recruitment process and meet the minimum entry requirements for the programme. |
Programme regulations | Attendance requirements:
As employees of their host organisation, trainees are required to attend the workplace as required by their employer. Trainees are required to attend all sessions as specified by the Higher Education Institute. |
This specification provides a concise summary of the main feature of the programme and the learning outcomes expected of a threshold Clinical Scientist. More detailed information on module-specific learning outcomes, learning and assessment methods is available in the relevant module pages. More detailed information on entry routes and requirements can be found on the NSHCS website.
