Programme aim

To provide clinical scientist trainees with strong science-based, patient-centred clinical training in Cardiac, Critical Care, Vascular and Respiratory and Sleep Sciences.

Programme level learning outcomes

Vascular Science

  1. Assess vascular anatomy and complex pathophysiology using ultrasound, applying the principles of ultrasound physics to optimise images
  2. Analyse, interpret and report ultrasound findings with reference to haemodynamics
  3. Evaluate the treatment pathways for vascular disease.
  4. Appraise the impact of research evidence on national guidelines and vascular science practice
  5. Develop and deliver services and practice in vascular science
  6. Perform quality assurance of Vascular Science practice.
  7. Communicate effectively with patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
  8. Practice in accordance with current guidance, evidence-base and professional standards
  9. Appraise the wider health and social context in which they practice and the patient experience of care, investigations and interventions
  10. Interpret, analyse and critique information and data to aid in patient care and service improvement.

Entry routes and requirements

Entry routes In England there are two routes into the programme

  • Direct entry – Trainees are competitively appointed into a training post funded through the local Health Education England training board
  • In-service entry – Trainees enter the programme with the support of their employers.
Entry requirements For both entry routes, STP applicants must participate in the national recruitment process and meet the minimum entry requirements for the programme.
Programme regulations Attendance requirements:

As employees of their host organisation, trainees are required to attend the workplace as required by their employer.

Trainees are required to attend all sessions as specified by the Higher Education Institute.
