Assessments

You must complete:

  • 1 of the following DOPS/ OCEs:
Switch on and calibrate equipment and lighting levels DOPS
Prepare a consultation plan for visual impaired patient activity DOPS
Derive differential diagnoses DOPS
Perform an external examination of the eyes and adnexia, checking pupil reactions DOPS
Instil eye drops DOPS
Perform fundoscopy DOPS
Practice safe hygiene and probe placement and care for tonometery DOPS
Report findings in notes, accurately and legibly DOPS
Review the referral letter and medical notes to extract all relevant information OCE
Introduce clinician and outline purpose of interaction, goals and address any questions arising OCE
Take a detailed and relevant patient history OCE
Take patients consent for procedures OCE
Review medical history for contra-indications, check data dosage and drug, observe safe hygiene, prepare and inform patients of procedure OCE

Learning outcomes

  1. Interpret referral letters in conjunction with medical and ophthalmic history, together with any pre-existing optometric, imaging or electrophysiological findings, where available, to formulate the appropriate testing strategy
  2. Care for visually impaired individuals and their families appropriately, with due consideration of the impact of their visual impairment
  3. Undertake a comprehensive ophthalmic examination safely and effectively, including external examination of ocular adnexae, assessment of pupil size and reactions, examination of anterior segment with a slit lamp or direct ophthalmoscope and fundus examination, and understand of the principles of tonometry
  4. Derive a differential diagnosis and identify further investigations that will facilitate reaching a diagnostic conclusion
  5. Maintain an ongoing accurate, relevant and legible recording of information in the patient record
  6. Administer appropriate and approved eye drops where required, according to applicable protocols
