Direct Observation of Practical Skills Titles

  • Calibrate equipment and set up for a video urodynamic test.
  • Risk assess a patient for a video urodynamic test.
  • Obtain images at appropriate intervals for a video urodynamic test for lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Observed Communication Event Titles

  • Explaining a procedure to a patient of child-bearing capacity and obtain consent for the procedure.
  • Discuss result of test with a colleague.
  • Take patient history for a video urodynamic test and verify test referral is still valid.

Learning outcomes

# Learning outcome
1

Identify and assess when video urodynamic diagnostic testing is appropriate.

2

Discuss findings and results of tests with the multidisciplinary team and patients to influence treatment plans.

3

Perform video urodynamic tests in a range of patients, tailoring it to the patient and answering urodynamic questions.

4

Employ effective, compassionate communication skills with patients and the multidisciplinary team.

5

Produce accurate reports for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients with a variety of urodynamic conditions.

6

Evaluate current practice in line with guidelines and standards and mitigate risks presented to patients and colleagues.

Clinical experiences

Clinical experiences help you to develop insight into your practice and a greater understanding of your specialty's impact on patient care. Clinical experiences should be included in your training plan and you may be asked to help organise your experiences. Reflections and observations from your experiences may help you to advance your practice and can be used to develop evidence to demonstrate your awareness and appreciation of your specialty.

Activities

  1. Attend a paediatric video urodynamics clinic.
  2. Observe radiological procedures related to pelvic floor e.g. proctograms.
  3. Attend a gynaecology clinic where urodynamic care is discussed.
  4. Attend and observe the radiation safety and reporting practices for the x-ray equipment used in video urodynamics.
  5. Attend a community clinic for patients with urodynamic conditions.

Academic content (MSc in Clinical Science)

Important information

The academic parts of this module will be detailed and communicated to you by your university. Please contact them if you have questions regarding this module and its assessments. The module titles in your MSc may not be exactly identical to the work-based modules shown in the e-portfolio. Your modules will be aligned, however, to ensure that your academic and work-based learning are complimentary.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the range of equipment used in urodynamic science, including video-urodynamics and the application of ionising radiation-based investigations and contrast medium usage.
  2. Integrate the findings from clinical history and examination to suggest potential pathophysiology affecting the urinary tract and propose an appropriate choice of urodynamic investigation.
  3. Interpret the results from video-urodynamics in a range of patients and make recommendations for treatment and follow-up.
  4. Articulate the key findings of neurogenic bladder dysfunction.
  5. Critically evaluate the effect of neurological conditions on male and female gastrointestinal, sexual and reproductive function recognising the potential impact of these conditions for patients.

Indicative content

  • Integration of urodynamic knowledge and theory into standard clinical pathways for both males and females
  • Revision of upper and lower urinary tract anatomy and physiology
  • Integration of video fluoroscopy and other imaging techniques into the urodynamic evaluation
  • Pathology
    • Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction including recognition of dysnergia between the bladder and bladder neck or distal sphincter, including the grades of vesico-ureteric reflux and the risk neurogenic bladder poses to renal function and control of incontinence
    • Post-prostatectomy incontinence
    • Idiopathic urinary retention in the female
  • Recurrent UTI indications for video urodynamic testing
  • Practice standards and guidelines
  • Legislation, radiation protection
  • IRMIR
  • Surgical treatment of urological disorders (male and female)
  • Role of the multidisciplinary team
  • Sacral nerve stimulation
  • Ambulatory urodynamics
  • Physics of UPP and RLPP
