Aim of this module

This module will introduce trainees to the principles and practice of Andrology. Trainees will gain an appreciation of the practice of Andrology, including, the patient pathway, treatment options, the roles of the multidisciplinary team and the principles of human reproductive physiology and anatomy.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module the trainee will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an extended understanding of male reproductive anatomy, physiology and normal function to recognition of pathology.
  2. Examine guidelines, regulatory and legislation processes applied to practices in Andrology appraising the requirements for accurate record keeping for patient data.
  3. Critically appraise the patient pathway in diagnostic andrology through to therapeutic treatments.

  • Overview of male sexual differentiation, including differentiation of the fetal testes, and the endocrinology and embryology of sexual differentiation.
  • Principles of sexual reproduction and meiosis.
  • The anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive tract.
  • Male reproductive endocrinology.
  • Female reproductive endocrinology.
  • Male andrological function and diagnostic options to study dysfunction.
  • Introduction to guidelines and diagnostic best practice.
  • Introduction to diagnostic laboratory standards (ISO and UKAS).
  • Overview of the patient treatment pathways available for andrological dysfunction.
  • The roles of different professions in achieving diagnosis, therapy and support, including clinicians, scientists, clinical embryologists, nurses and counsellors.
  • Principles of patient communication skills and recognising support requirements.
  • Principles of good laboratory practice and record keeping.
